Is your social media designed for success in 2020?

I hope you had a lovely, relaxing Christmas and are now back at your desk raring to go for the New Year! Whilst the festive season can be hectic, it’s also a good time to reflect on and review how your business performed during the past year and what you need to do differently to achieve the results you want. So hopefully, you found a bit of downtime to think about your goals and objectives for 2020.

If social media is one of the areas you’d like to improve on, then now’s the time to put a robust strategy and action plan in place. You might be wondering why your business needs a social media strategy. Well, let me explain using one of my favourite sayings: ‘You wouldn’t build a house without solid foundations.’ If you did, you’d expect the house to fall down. And that’s just what will happen to your social media if you don’t have a strategy. Without strategic direction and planning, your activities will be designed for failure, not success.

The key to creating the right social media strategy is clarity and focus. You really need to nail down why you’re using social media to promote your business and what you want to achieve. You also need to consider who you want to talk to (your target audience), where they hang out online (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram etc) and how to communicate with them (words, images, videos, podcasts, hashtags and so on).

The answers to these questions will form the basis of your social media strategy. At this point, you don’t need to go into masses of detail, as all that will come later when you create your activity or action plan for 2020. At this stage, it’s all about identifying your core objectives and what social media success will look like for your business, and deciding how to achieve this.

Here are some tips to help you get your strategic thinking cap on:

  1. Do your research

If you’re new to social media, or last year’s activities really didn’t work for you, you’ll need to go back to the drawing board. A useful exercise is to look at what your competitors are doing online. Which social media platforms are they active on? What types of content and communication styles are they using to talk to their audience? Which posts are getting lots of engagement and responses, and which ones are proving less effective?

Whilst I’m not suggesting you copy what other companies are doing verbatim, the principle of what works for them should work for your business. You might also pick up some fresh ideas around content creation, best practice for your industry sector and new developments in social media that you might not have known about.

  • Be SMART

You’ve probably heard of SMART objectives. The acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic (or Relevant) and Timebound. As with all your business goals, your social media objectives need to be SMART to be effective.

In particular, think about how you’ll measure your success. This should include collecting and analysing data from social media insights and related tools such as Google Analytics, to assess how well your accounts are performing and what you need to do differently. Your strategy and action plan are working documents, so you should factor in regular reviews and updates during the year.

  • Make life easier for yourself

Managing your social media accounts can be time-consuming, especially if you’re a solopreneur who juggles working in your business with working on it. Luckily, there are some fantastic tools out there that can help you automatically schedule posts, manage contacts and run multiple accounts from a single platform.
